Dangers of Cell Phone Radiation:

Despite a growing body of published medical evidence that radiation from cell phone usage is hazardous to our health... the public is still assured that they are safe. Remember that there was a time that the American public was unconcerned with the health risks of smoking!  

During the 1930s and 1940s, smoking was established as normal behavior, even though an awareness of its health risks was on the rise.  The tobacco companies responded by using images of doctors to perpetuate the illusion of their safety. The implication was that doctors were the ones to judge safety of smoking, rather than mounting credible scientific evidence.  One company boasted massive numbers of doctors smoking their brand.  Plus, the majority of American medical doctors did indeed smoke.  

 The truth is that there is currently enough evidence and technology available to warrant taking immediate steps to reduce exposure of consumers to cell-phone-related electromagnetic radiation. This conclusion was reported in a research paper published in the medical journal, Medical Physics (December 2008) entitled, Point/counterpoint (Khurana VG, Moulder JE, Orton CG.)
 

Apparently we needed the U.S. Surgeon General to warn us that sucking smoke into our lungs was a bad idea. By the same token, it seems that professional football players need a disclaimer that smashing one’s head repeatedly could lead to future health problems.  It seems we also need expensive medical studies to prove that sitting all day at a desk has health consequences, and that water, sleep, and sunshine are good for us!  

There are just some things that we should not wait until large-scale scientific studies are published… and more importantly, their data revealed to the general public. 

Nevertheless, we are assured by the “authorities” that it’s okay to hold a device to one’s head that clearly emits radiation.

With all warranted sarcasm aside, the potential harm of electromagnetic radiation from cell phones and other electronic devices must not be denied. I consider this to be a no-brainer. Anything that we can do to shield ourselves from electromagnetic radiation should be done. The Liebell family takes measures to minimize exposure to potentially harmful electromagnetic fields. I share what we do in this article.

For example, we have WIRED Internet throughout our house. We made sure Virginia Natural Gas installed their Wi-Fi smart meter a minimum of 30 feet away from our house. The Liebell Clinic uses only wired technology for our computers (sorry, don't expect a Wi-Fi password when you're there!).

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are invisible forms of radiation. They are associated with countless sources, both natural and human-made. Earth and our atmosphere have natural electromagnetic fields. The human body is electromagnetic, as are all living systems. Unfortunately, consideration of the cumulative effects of radiation is not part of conventional medical investigation. It should be. Evaluating and managing bio-energetic function is the core principle of the Liebell Clinic. I have written this article in response to my patients’ requests for advice on how we can protect ourselves living in a world with progressively expanding radiation from which there is little-to-no escape. 

Imagine if we could see the electric fields around us; we would be terrified. Not everyone is noticeably sensitive to EMF; people conduct electricity to varying degrees. However, many people may not realize they are affected. Regardless of sensitivity, long-term radiation exposure is harmful. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) determined that non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation (NRFR) from cell phones, laptops, and various devices may contribute to cancer. They have been classified as Class 2B Carcinogens. 

Of course, nobody gets cancer from smoking a cigarette once-in-a-while; it is daily and long-term exposure that wreaks havoc. It is hard to believe that not long ago, medical doctors promoted smoking! Did we really need a U.S. Surgeon General to tell us sucking smoke into the lungs was hazardous to one’s health? I am not the first person to compare ignoring electromagnetic radiation from excessive technology exposure to the blind eye that was once turned towards the dangers of smoking. 

Scientists in the 1700s knew that electricity was not completely harmless. However, once the world became electrified; there was no turning back. We are now in way too deep with regards to the types of EMF all living things are now exposed to daily. Microwave ovens, computers, smart meters, cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth devices, fitness tracker watches, high power lines, and even medical diagnostic equipment are sources of EMF from which there is NO escape. EMF are here to stay. If you are serious about understanding the science behind the perils of EMF; I cannot more strongly recommend reading the 2020 book, The Invisible Rainbow—a History of Electricity and Life by Arthur Firstenberg. It is pure science—not conspiracy theories!

Harmful radiation (from both natural and unnatural sources) is affecting our bodies. We must do whatever we can to protect ourselves from it. Taking steps to minimize our exposure is essential, but unfortunately, there are many sources of radiation we cannot avoid. The fifth generation of cell phone networks, (currently being installed by wireless carriers) known as 5G is certainly of great concern to enlightened and health-conscious people. Incidentally, 5G is not the same thing as the comparatively mild 5G (Gigahertz), which is the frequency band of Wi-Fi routers that have been around more than 20 years.

We cannot stop the world’s expansion of harmful EMF. The technology industry’ is mighty, wealthy, and powerful, and everybody loves their phones and other incredible wireless devices. Ignoring the dangers of radiation sources will likely continue with unlikely support for scientific study and public education of its harmful effects. We must take matters into our own hands, and do our best to make our homes, work environments, and our own bodies less radiation toxic. There are various devices and strategies for reducing EMF and protecting ourselves from harmful effects. The marketplace for various EMF protection devices is vast and expanding. Like any consumer market, it is very difficult to know what products are legitimately effective. 

Over the years, I have spent countless hours studying the subject by reading science journals, articles, and books on the subject. There is no perfect solution, nor do I represent my recommendations as comprehensive scientifically researched and proven approaches. I have been asked regularly by patients what to do about EMF. What measures can we take? What devices should we use, or not use? It is not easy to answer these questions because there are so many products on the market, many of which I am certain are not legitimate. I certainly do not think anything is 100% effective. Nevertheless, we should take measures to protect ourselves as much as possible. There are various cell phone cases and devices that claim to block radiation. However, I am not sufficiently convinced these are effective enough recommend them yet. I will only recommend devices and precautions that the Liebell family and many of my patients use for ourselves. Like most wellness promoting and preventative measures—no medical claims or FDA statements of effectiveness are made here. 

The following are my recommendations, based upon what I personally do for myself and my family:

When you are not using your phone, keep it off your body. Ask me during any visit to the Liebell Clinic to prove to you (using two different scientific methods) that constant physical connection to your phone is harmful. Sorry, but this includes smart watches and fitness trackers. You couldn't pay me to wear one of those all day long (and worse, all night long!).

Few people are aware the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires phone manufacturers to warn users NEVER to carry it on your body! That is right… but you practically need a microscope to see the warning in the user’s manual! The heat that builds up when our body parts are exposed to the microwave radiation of our cell phone is called SAR, an acronym for Specific Absorption Rate. “SAR measurement may exceed the FCC exposure guidelines for body-worn operation if positioned less than 15 mm (5/8 inch) from the body (e.g., when carrying iPhone in your pocket).”

Use speaker mode rather than having your phone near your brain! Distance, distance, distance! The farther away radiation devices are from you; the better off you are. 

Never use a Bluetooth earpiece! This practice is putting a radiation device in contact with the nerves of the ear that go directly to your brain and body (ear acupuncture principles), as well as in close contact with your brain itself. Yes, there’s no published medical data of its dangers… but, I wouldn’t keep these devices in my ears! 

Put your phone in Airplane Mode: Must you be available ALL the time? It really is okay to turn the thing off sometimes! For those old enough, remember the days when you made a phone call… and if there was no answer, you called back later? Ask me to demonstrate with your phone (using my EMF meter) how this measure will decrease your radiation exposure.

The Erchonia R2L is a tiny device that gets peeled and placed on your cell phone. To my knowledge, the R2L (Radiation to Light) it is one of the few devices that has any scientific backing of its effectiveness in reducing cell phone radiation. It has been certified by two independent radiation testing labs to reduce it. We have these available in-office, which we purchase directly from Erchonia Medical ($30) and they last indefinitely. 

Do NOT use an Internet/Wi-Fi active cell phone as an alarm clock: Get that thing away from your bed and your head! Regular old fashion alarm clocks still exist (I use one). And… do not charge your cell phone in your bedroom at night. 

Use WIRED Internet as much as possible. My home is wired for Internet in every room. More ethernet ports and less Wi-Fi results in less exposure. Laptops and tablets that are physically connected to you may be an unnecessary source of cumulative daily radiation. Wireless may be cool and convenient, but it is not good for your health. 

Be aware of smart meters: These are electronic wireless communication devices from both power and gas companies. They record energy consumption for billing purposes. You may have one on your house and not know it. The Liebell family converted our house several years ago from oil heat to natural gas. We insisted that the Virginia Natural Gas company must position their data meter at least 30 feet away from our house. Remember that distance from radiation is the key. Distance Matters Most: The closer you are to a fire; the more likely you’ll get burned! Thus, the closer you are to a radiation source—the greater your exposure. It isn’t rocket science; stay as far away from devices as possible to decrease your cumulative radiation exposure. A small amount of distance makes a big difference in your EMF exposure.

Wear a Shungite Pendant or Bracelet: This is a fascinating approach for fending off the harmful effects of EMFs. Shungite is a billions-of years-old rare stone from the Shunga village of Russia. It is composed of unique hollow molecular spheres of 60 carbon atoms called fullerenes (buckyballs or C60). Shungite has been said to have EMF shielding and harmonizing properties for living things. I have read dozens of scientific papers on shungite. 

Personal accounts of its benefits are reported by people around the world. Although there isn’t much scientific proof of its specific medical benefits;  there is a TON of scientific knowledge confirming its various useful applications. It certainly appears that the carbon fullerenes have an EMF-protective effect. 

I am confident that wearing a shungite bracelet or pendant reduces absorbed radiation. Keep in mind that nobody gets rich from selling rocks (Well, perhaps the manufacturers of  “Mood Rings” in the 1970s did)! I highly doubt there will be substantial medical research conducted to prove the importance or effectiveness of wearing a shungite pendant to reduce radiation harm. 

To be crystal clear, I do not view shungite as a “healing crystal,” nor am I making any medical claims for its usage. I see it as a protective substance with health benefits. In the late 1990s, fullerenes were discovered to naturally occur in shungite. These microscopic carbon cages appear to be protective to EMF radiation. There is a substantial amount of recently published scientific research that supports its various properties. Although these studies do not directly prove the benefits of wearing bracelets or pendants; they substantiate shungite as a beneficial substance. 

Here’s a small sample of what I’ve found: · 

A 2017 study published in the medical journal, Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity revealed an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect against solar radiation in mice. The researchers stated that fullerene-based compound applications have been rapidly increasing in the health industry; the need of biomedical research is urgently in demand.1· 

Another 2017 study from the journal, Chemistry found shungite superior to other carbon-based substances in energy related electrochemical catalytic reactions.2· 

According to 2019 research published in the journal Plants, shungite-treated cucumber plants that were denied watering for 21 were determined to be healthier, with dark green leaves, than control plants.3· 

In 2018, the European Journal of Medicine reported that shungite can find wide practical applications in many branches of science and industry.4 · 

A 2017 study also found that carbon from shungite can remove radioactive compounds from water.5· 

Experimental data from a 2000 study indicated technological efficiency of using natural fullerenes extracted from shungites in medical and ecological applications.6· 

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Water Chemistry and Technologyproved shungite to be effective in defluoridation of drinking water.7· 

According to the 2018 journal, Technical Physics Letters, an important field of engineering application of shungites is radar-absorbing screens, which are especially effective in the microwave range.8· 

A 2018 Science Reports paper concluded that shungite could indeed be successfully exploited for bio-related applications like artificial muscles, neural interfaces.9· 

A 2017 study published in Biological Science reported the protective effects of shungite concentrations on inactivation of heavy metals in algae compared to crustaceans.10· 

According to the Russian Journal of General Chemistry, shungite has biological effects. It can be potentially used for non-specific regulatory purposes, including osmosis- and immune regulation. It can also be applied in other biotechnology fields due to ability to selectively bind certain proteins and stabilize their structure.11· 

The results of a 2019 study indicate that compacted (sintered) shungite powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering.12· 

2013, Nanotechnologies in Construction: The unusual properties of shungite are used in diverse industrial and environmental applications including metal production, metallurgy, water purification, high-technology uses, thermolysis and organosynthesis of cyclic hydrocarbons. Shungite also is an effective sorbent for removal of organic and inorganic substances, pathogenic bacteria and heavy metals from solutions.13

It is up to us as individuals to decide how seriously to take the harmful health effects triggered by exposure to radiation from technology. Science supports its urgent attention. However, business, commerce, convenience, and the coolness of technology opposes it. 

Protecting ourselves as best we can with sensible usage of technology and knowledge of its potential perils appears to be the realistic middle ground. By the way… I wrote this on my desktop computer with a wired Internet connection!
